ORANGE CITY—Donny Wayne Solsma, 60, Orange City, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022, at UnityPoint Health — St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Living Water Community Church in Orange City. Visitation with family present will be 1-2 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Betty was currently a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City.

Family meant the world to Loren, and spending time with them was always his top priority. Watching his children develop and use their own gifts and talents brought him great joy. Glen’s teaching career took them to Hillsboro, North Dakota, and then to Orange City, Iowa. Ardie was a tremendous support to Glen throughout his teaching career, typing many tests for him along with the early versions of Glen’s dissertation for his PhD. In retirement, she typed hundreds of pages of Glen’s family history books.
He was a lifelong member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church, and having Jesus at the center of his life, and his family’s life, brought them strength for each day and hope for each tomorrow. On Nov. 4, 1994, Loren married the love of his life, Michelle Lynn “Shelly” Krommendyk. Together they built their home in Hull and were blessed with three children, Lindsey in 2000, Allison in 2002, and Nathan in 2005. Loren enjoyed doing thoughtful and creative projects around their home, including remodeling the house, and bringing more character to their backyard. What mattered most to him was being able to do those projects, and enjoy the end result, with his family.
Adelina Sanchez, 48, Hawarden
During their retirement years, Arnold and Betty enjoyed traveling with their camper, often to fairs in the area. Arnold passed away on Oct. 20, 2000, in Sioux Falls, after more than 50 years of marriage. In 2015, Betty moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in January of 2021, she became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City. Loren was diagnosed with cancer on Oct. 14, 2021, and he fought his battle with our Lord Jesus by his side.
BELLA VISTA, AR—Jeffrey Balster, 63, of Bella Vista, AR, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Rogers, surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. ORANGE CITY—Alma Fay Engeltjes, 78, Orange City, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2022, at Orange City Area Health System. Visitation with family present will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Oolman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Janice Vander Zwaag.

Mark Haverdink officiating. During this time, a new teacher came to Portland. Even though this new teacher lived in an apartment across the alley from her family, it wasn’t until a church supper that she had the opportunity to first visit with Glen Hegstad. Soon, Ardie and Glen were dating and married on July 24, 1955, at Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland.
Ardie had the opportunity of advancing her career at the bank but turned it down to take care of their growing family. Spending time with his family was important to Ken, and he regularly attended his grandchildren’s various activities. He enjoyed reading, working on handyman projects, and restoring old tractors, which he drove in the annual Orange City Tulip Festival parades.
Marcella “Sally” Klein, 88, Sheldon, formerly of Ashton
The Oolman Funeral Home in Hull is in charge of arrangements. Monday, Nov. 28, at the church, followed by interment at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Ardell “Ardie” Thelma was born on Oct. 8, 1930, to Theodore and Agnes Pederson at the family farm near Finley, North Dakota. She was raised on the farm and went to country school until her family moved to Portland, North Dakota. Ardie graduated from Portland High School in 1948. She attended one quarter of college at Mayville State College in Mayville, North Dakota, at which point she was offered a bookkeeping job at a local business that she accepted.
She was also a 20-year member of Sweet Adelines International, an organization of women singers. She enjoyed listening to her favorite hymns, singing, embroidering, cross stitching, and going to family gatherings. Cloudy skies with a few snow showers this afternoon. Since 1977, the Oolman Family has earned a reputation of excellence in funeral service. Through the years, Oolman Funeral Homes has grown from one location in Orange City, to include chapels in Hull and Hospers.
She was united in marriage to Arnold John Smit on Nov. 22, 1949. They made their home and raised their family in Hull, where in addition to being a wife and mother, Betty helped Arnold with his trucking business. In 1990, the couple retired and moved to Sioux Center, where they lived for five years before moving to Orange City.

Betty Joan was born on a farm north of Middleburg on Sept. 2, 1930, the first of three daughters born to Jacob J.
She was previously a member of the American Reformed Church in Hull, where she had been active in the church’s choir, including serving as the director. She also used her musical gifts as a member of the Sioux County Women’s Chorus; as well as singing with her sisters and playing the piano and organ. Betty liked to keep a neat home, often decorating with flower arrangements that she made. She also enjoyed going shopping, and was always well dressed and stylish, even as her health declined. ORANGE CITY—Elizabeth Doppenberg, 93, Orange City, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, at Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center.
She grew up on her parents’ farm and attended a nearby country school and Western Christian High School in Hull. A luncheon and time of visitation with the family will take place at the church, following the interment. Loren Dale Van Otterloo was born on Nov. 14, 1971, in Sioux Center, the son of Arthur and Margaret Van Otterloo.
In 1949, she was hired by the local bank and served for six years as a teller and then a cashier. Monday, Dec. 12, at the church, followed by interment at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.
As their kids grew older, Ardie began working at Ramaker Library of Northwestern College. She enjoyed working with the staff and students of the library for nineteen years before retiring in 1992. A few snow showers developing during the afternoon. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson-in-law, B. Jay Leusink; three brothers, Vernon Riphagen, Merlin Riphagen, and Kenneth Riphagen in infancy; three sisters, Baulah Harms, Arloa Vande Brake, and Fay Masters; and two sisters-in-law, Esther Johnson and Leona Van Maasdam. Mrs. De Jager was a lifelong member of the Maurice Reformed Church, where in earlier years she participated in the Women’s Guild and sang in the church choir.
